I’ve met a lot of wonderful people since I’ve been blogging here at The Pop Up Princess–like my friend, Cassie. Cassie is one of those people that instantly becomes your friend from the moment you start chatting, and I always love talking camper remodels with her. Cassie was my very first real reader feature, and I remember being so excited to share her first remodel with you all back in 2014. A few months later, Cassie sold her pop up camper in favor of a bigger model, and she gave that one a full makeover as well. Not long after that, Cassie got the itch to remodel once more. I remember thinking she was crazy when she bought her next camper and started pulling out the paint brushes and power tools again. I’m getting tired just thinking about it. 😉
This time, though, she went even bigger and traded her pop up camper for a hybrid travel trailer. If you aren’t familiar with hybrid campers, they are basically travel trailers with pop out bunkend beds. If you are looking for the convenience of a travel trailer and the feel of a pop up camper, they are the best of both worlds. Cassie worked her magic on her new little trailer, and I know you are going to want all the details. Without any further ado, here’s Cassie to tell you all about her latest project camper.
Cassie’s Hybrid Travel Trailer Makeover
Through Pinterest, I did a lot of research on camper remodels to find the best option for paint to use on the cupboards. I felt the primer and paint I used on the first two didn’t hold up the way I’d wanted it to, and really wanted to make sure I painted these with something that would resist chipping. I found a blog where the owner had used Nuvo Cupboard Paint on hers, so I decided to give it a try. I first bought the cupboard kit off Amazon, (Love 2-day Amazon Prime shipping! 😉 ) and this came with a paint brush, two quarts of paint, and a roller. Personally, if I did it again, I am not sure I would buy the kit. I wasn’t super impressed with the roller, and I would have rather used a Purdy paint brush.
I’ve included our final budget, so you can see just how inexpensively a remodel can be done. It didn’t take much money at all to totally transform our little camper. I’m so excited for all the trips we have planned, and we hope to camp in it as much as possible during the summer. 😀
Happy Camping!

Beautiful remodel! What kind of hybrid is this? We have been thinking about going that route too and I love the set up of this one! Thanks 🙂

I’m so excited to see this post. I’ve had two pups in the past. My first one I remodeled in 1982. The second was a “like new” previously owned. We traded it in on a year end Mark down last fall because we needed more space. We bought a hybrid because we love the feel. I’ve been a reader of Pop up princess for a while. I love all the photos and info I find here. I would love to know make and model of yours. Thanks for sharing!

Love the make over and that it is on a hybrid. We have a 2001 Rockwood Roo and I’m looking for ideas for the remodel. Mine is similar to your.

Fabulous job!!! I am wanting to re-do our hybrid as well…I was just wondering how you recovered those tricky corner pillows on the U-shaped bench. Do you have any tips? Thank you in advance 🙂

Beautiful! My bf and I are buying our 1st camper this weekend, a ’04 Jayco Feather hybrid trailer. I cannot wait to get to work on it. It’s in good shape but looking at your before and after pictures is so inspiring. Any idea how many man hours you put into it?

Looks great! Would love to see pictures of the outside.

How many hours of work would you say this reno took? It looks amazing but I’m a bit intimidated to tackle my own!

Beautiful job Cassie! I have a couch in front of one of our beds in our pop-up. Do you have any suggestions for keeping those cushions clean? I cringe a little whenever I step on mine! Does anyone else have any tips?

OMG you totally sound like me. I have had 3 campers in 3 seasons. And have redone all of them.
My current 30 foot hard side we put in a back splash, painted, and made the frig look stainless like everything else.
Everyone loves it ! I even stated a facebook group so people could share camper hacks.

I am remodeling our 2001 rockwood roo camper and I have already painted my cabinets and replaced my hinges, handles, and knobs so now it is time to do the cushions. Do you have any tricks on the corner dinette cushions. I am not sure how I am going to recover those 2 pieces. Please get back to me ASAP I am buying fabric tomorrow. Thank you so much and I love your remodel it has def gave me tons of motivations and several ideas to make my old camper be my new favorite place to be.

I’m not sure Cassie checks the comments sections of her feature regularly, Brittany, so I am afraid you likely won’t get an answer before you purchase fabric. I do know that many other readers with those tricky corner cushions have taken the original covers apart and used them as patterns. Do you have much sewing experience?

We just got a 2000 cub hybrid and after arriving home noticed the cover under the main camper in front is wearing off, is there a DIY repair? We just can not afford to have it professionally done and do not want it to get water damage or rotting for now the wood is fine!

Thia is amazing!
May I ask how long it did take you r husband and you to do the makeover?
Thank you!

We bought a 2000 Jayco Jayfeather hybrid tent trailer last summer. It’s a 17Z model. We love it! The hardshell cabin is only 15′, but it has everything we need for comfort & room. Then there is a queen-size tent bed on each end. It’s super-easy to fold them out, and they are very comfortable. We weren’t sure we’d really like tent beds, but there’s something about having air under the floor panel that makes the cushions cushy. In pleasant weather, we can unzip the windows to feel even more part of nature, but don’t get dirt in our beds as you might in a tent. Reading this blog has helped to know what kind of paint to use when I get around to painting. So far, I’ve sewn dinette booth cushions, replaced curtains, and covered the J-knife sofa. Another thing I really like about this year model is the manual awning. You can put the poles out carport style, which makes a lot of space in that entrance area. Automatic awnings have those big arms which get in the way in my opinion. May I ask where you got the peel & stick flooring? I was concerned about it ever peeling back up, esp. in hot weather. I’ve found my adhesive velcro melts off then. Same thing with adhesive wallpaper I’ve seen used. I’m worried the heat in our Alabama summers will cause it to melt off.

I love that I can search “how to renovate a hybrid camper” and get such an awesome article! I have had this camper just sitting around doing nothing for 5 years and I am so excited to get started on this renovation. The budget is obviously going to be the trickiest part but since we are starting into winter I guess there’s no rush. The outside of the camper is pretty beat up as well, anyone have suggestions on exterior cleaning/painting/updates?
Katie says
Do you have any instructions/photos of how you did cushions? Especially the triangular shaped corner cushions? 🙂
